  1. OPPORTUNITY, albeit not a K-12 one: As some of you know, every Lehigh teacher ed candidate is required to prepare a web-based portfolio. There’s two ways to do this: 1. build your own website according to a set of specifications (this is what Wake Forest does; see here for examples), or 2. use a purpose-built portfolio program. Lehigh is preparing the latter, but we aren’t sure how soon it will be operational. So: 1-2 intrepid 415 students are being sought to help prepare instruction on how to use the new system OR how to build-your-own, depending on how things go. The delivery date is October 30; that’s when this semester’s student teachers need to start using whatever’s available. If you’re interested in picking up this work with the CoE teacher ed students as your project, contact Dr. Waddell (lrw207) — and please CC me on it!

  2. Another Lehigh CoE opportunity: Dr. Bishop has a monstrously large 406 section this fall, and could use someone to help her prep some instructional materials. A specific topic she mentioned was “some Office 2007-based ‘how 2s’ or other things,” so I imagine this might have some good synergy with Becky’s classes. Again, if you’re interested in this, email Dr. Bishop and CC me, please.UPDATE: A couple of students are now in-process on this, so it’s off the table.

  3. Another opportunity, albeit not yet confirmed: Some tech teachers at Broughal Middle School are thinking about using a new, web-based tool for movie making, could use some help learning it, managing it. If interested, talk to me and I’ll pass you along to them.

  4. Another Broughal middle school opportunity, and it’s a two-fer: (1) In mid-October, 7th graders will be using Google Earth and AEJEE (a free GIS system) for the first time, and the teachers need a “simple guide” to using these tools — ideally, a SINGLE PAGE that identifies key features. (2) The students participating in these activities will be taking a pre- and posttest; the items have been generated, but they have to be put into a web-based tool (e.g., WebMonkey). So: They’ll need some help with that. Talk to your ol’ perfessor about either of these options.

  5. I wil be working with a high school class at Easton High School instead of the elementary school. It was becoming too much of a task and I was concerned that it would not be finished by December.

  6. I will be working with a 3rd grade teacher in the Stroudsburg school district. She does do some small technology stuff in her classroom, but by no means a lot. Since kids at early ages tend to struggle most with math, we’re going to work to create a few technology items for her classroom.

  7. I forgot to add the description… We would like to create some useful podcast for mathematics and organize them into website and/or CD. These would be used for additional student help and review (esp for PSSA). I’m also considering in addition to this a small WebQuest or Clicker type activity. I’d like to examine the kids reaction to the different activities. We’ll have to have a good look at the timeline to see if it is doable.

  8. [...] shameem in tbte415. trackback After the the class on Monday September 24, I came to know from our class blog that I can work with Dr. Bishop for this project. I emailed her about the possible opportunities [...]

  9. I may work with CoE teacher ed students in the portfolio project at Lehigh campus. I am waiting for Dr. Waddell’s further decision about my detailed work.

  10. I have a opportunity to work with Dr. Bishop in specific project like Office 2007 based ‘how2s’.

  11. I am working with a private music teacher, specifically will be working with a 16 year old female and a 10 year old male. Should be lots of fun.

  12. @ali: Slick move with the pingback! Do other students know how to do this? I’ve never done it myself, so I wouldn’t mind seeing how you do it….
@Trish: Great set of ideas! Something that may help you brainstorm is this set of iMovies out of Springfield, IL. For example, if there’s a movie about math that seems interesting, you could consider making a podcast version of it, or using it with a set of clickers, etc.

  13. Thanks, Dr.Hammond. I’ll check it out!

  14. I will be working with a teacher in BASD, she teaches 5th grade, we are working on developing a lesson that relates to science standards as well as connects the the schools yearly school improvement plan. The topic is on recycling and going GREEN (pretty cool). The students are developing audio podcast commercials and will post then for comment on the web for the school and fellow classmates.

  15. I will be working with a fourth grade teacher at the school where I work. We are working together on a short social studies unit about the 5 geographic regions in Pennsylvania – focusing on the land forms, natural resources, major cities, industries, and recreation. Our plan is to use a Jigsaw instructional strategy, and incorporate the use of Palm handhelds as students organize, summarize, and present information. We’ll use the Internet to find pictures, and have the students work together to create a PowerPoint Jeopardy review game at the end. I’m looking forward to a brief return to 4th grade, which is what I taught for many years!
