iTunes / iTunesU presentation thread

Patricia has provided her visual and handout. Note that they were prepared in Office 2007; if you’re having trouble opening them with earlier versions (e.g., 2003), know that you can download a converter from Microsoft.com. I’ve used it without a hitch.

  1. Patricia, thanks for giving us an intro to iTunes and iTunesU. I can offer three items for further exploration. First, Lehigh’s “secret door” to its iTunesU is: http://www3.lehigh.edu/itunesu/index.html. Note that it’s a double door–the URL is not linked anywhere from the top level (that I know of!) and you have to have a Lehigh user ID to see much of anything. Hooray! Second, I’d recommend checking out what USF has available via the iTunes store. For example, they have a set of PDFs about tech topics here–I find this interesting b/c the iTunes navigation is laid out by other media types (music, movies, TV shows, radio, podcasts — no PDFs!). Be sure to browse around the other tabs, too — there’s lots of info about topics such as Audacity. Also, there are other offerings from USF, such as this set of podcasts of readings of children’s literature. Lots of stuff in their iTunesU site–browse around. Finally, you can also find some neat K-12 work in iTunes. For example, investigate Radio Willow Web–these are podcasts created by elementary students in Omaha, Nebraska. (If the iTunes URL isn’t working, just go straight to their good ol’ fashioned website: http://www.mpsomaha.org/willow/radio.)

  2. I happen to explore on iTunesU a little further today. iTunesU seems to be very competitive as it takes weeks or even months for Apple to open a public space in iTunesU. I was told that Lehigh has already applied for its iTunesU public section and the request is pending.

  3. Ali: Thanks for looking into this. I don’t know the ins and outs of it. Can you provide a link to the info you found?

  4. iTunesU as an educational tool is a wonderful experience for teachers, students, and the community at large. The only issue that I find with iTunesU is requiring students to use it when to access materials when they are not at school. Even though technology is becoming more and more popular, teachers should not assume that all of their students will have access to iTunesU from home.

FYI, I’m not sure if everyone else is having this problem but can’t use the USF URL that is in the original blog posting. Below is the URL that I having problems with followed by the URL that iTunes gives when you search for “University of South Florida.”

    URL in Blog
    https://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/LoginDone/usf.edu

    URL in iTunes Search
    http://deimos3.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/usf.edu

  5. I found the below two links is useful when I used iTunesU at first time.

    1. Creating content for iPod + iTunes (it explains the file formats clearly).

    2. iTunesU user guide (an introduction to the new concepts)

  6. Patricia, thanks for bringing to my attention that Lehigh University did not come up in your itunesU search. I am fully aware of Lehigh’s itunesU but never thought of searching for it through Apple Website or iTunes. Ali, you are yet to provide us any links or reference to your claim about the protocol for getting listed by Apple. Any source for that claim? I personally enjoy the radio stations on iTunes and particularly like the visualizer feature. Running visualizer in full screen while listening to one of my favorite stations on a quiet evening with lights out is very relaxing. I am sure people may use iTunes very diferently. I also like to set it to automatically import CDs when inserted to the library and then playback. There is also a number of options for the playback.
Do not bring your iPod close to iTunes unless you want any changes because it automatically compares your library with the iPod and perform incremental update both ways.

  7. We use iTunes U that is embeded within Blackboard at Northampton Community College and it seems to be a great tool especially for pre-service teachers. Among the many uses iTunesU is used to create a portfolio.
